Before jumping into this directed activity that applies the skills necessary for strong word choice, be sure to review the power of words with students first. That way they will be better prepared for something a little more advanced.
Idea Generating: Top 25
After clearly establishing the purpose of word choice, place students in pairs to generate a list of their favorite 25 words. These words must be legitimate, purposeful, enlightening choices. Perhaps students like their sound or their meaning or their uniqueness. They cannot, however, pick words that are made up, slang, or purely scientific terms, but rather their list must include words that could actually be used in a Language Arts assignment.
They should use only their own lexicons, or mental dictionaries, in order to produce their Top 25. Prohibiting traditional or online dictionaries and thesauruses will ensure that students indeed know those words, which is critical later in this lesson.
