Along the old Hwy 98 from near Point Clear Alabama lays an all but forgotten Confederate Cemetery. Known as Confederate Rest it is located appropriately enough at the end of Confederate Rest road near the golf course to the Grand Hotel in Point Clear. The old Grand Hotel and the nearby Gunnison House served as a hospital and convalescent center for wounded Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War. It is estimated that over 473 soldiers who succumbed to their wounds were interred here. Tragically the original markers are lost to time and the men’s identities are lost to history in a fire at the hotel in 1869. The Alabama Historical Association erected a marker in 1897 to commemorate the site.
The Cemetery’s war dead, while located near the old ‘Federal Road” that Union General Edward Canby’s XIII and XVI Corps took from Gulf Shores to attack Fort Blakely near Mobile in 1865 in the last combined-force battle of the Civil War, is made up exclusively of unnamed Confederates who had died from wounds and sickness incurred during the Vicksburg Campaign in 1863. It is almost fitting that these units however marched near the Cemetery as both of these Army Corps had fought and suffered themselves during the Vicksburg Campaign and likely contributed to being the cause of the field.
