The Bible teaches that the ark of the covenant contained the original stone tablets displaying the Ten Commandments, a pot of manna and Aaron’s rod through which God was said to have performed miracles. Manna was a seed-like substance that fell from the sky (Numbers 11:9) from which the Israelites made honey-flavored wafers (Exodus 16:31) throughout their 40-year wilderness journey.

In her book titled At the Name of Jesus, author Sarah Hornsby indicated that the contents of the ark of the covenant represent God’s will, God’s provision, and God’s authority over the believer. Many New Testament passages support this interpretation. Jesus said he came to “fulfill the law.” (Matthew 5:17) He said he was the “bread from heaven,” (John 6:32) and he said to Pilate, “You say rightly that I am a king.” (John 18:37)

The Ark of the Covenant Within

The arc itself was a small box (approximately 45” x 27” x 27”) of gold-covered acacia wood. Priests atoned for sin by sprinkling blood from bulls and goats on the covering of the box, called the mercy seat. New Testament writers wrote that Christ’s death on the cross parallels this sprinkling for sin, “not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood.” (John 1:29; Acts 8:32; Hebrews 9:12; I Peter 1:19)
