Katharine Hepburn’s historic Connecticut residence is listed for $28,000,000. The four-time Oscar winner and legend of film, television, and stage summered at this brick estate set on the Long Island Sound for decades before spending the last seven years of her life here. The gingery and feisty Hepburn, who swam daily off the property’s  sandy beach until she was well into her 80s, told author Stuart W. Little (Home in Fenwick, A Memoir of a Place), “I would rather go to the (Fenwick), even if I could spend only an hour.”

Listing Details:

Square Footage: 8,368 square feet

Lot Size: 3.45 acres

Beds/Baths: 6 Beds/7.5 Bath

Listing Price: $28,000,000

Hepburn’s well-heeled parents built a summer home on this property back in 1912. When a 1938 hurricane leveled the original home, the actress spent between $275-300 K building the present 8,000 plus square foot brick home which, at the time, was the most costly residence in Fenwick. According to legend, Hepburn purchased a large set of blocks at toy emporium F.A.O. Schwartz to construct a model of her dream home.

Upon Hepburn’s 2003 death, neighbors Frank and Barbara Sciame purchased the estate with plans to subdivide the 3.4 acres, renovate and flip the residence. Following extensive renovations which kept the historical integrity of the home, the couple has placed the residence on the market, complete with the original acreage. Sciame’s F.J. Sciame Construction, Co. has been entrusted with significant restorations and additions including The Morgan Library & Museum, New York’s Harvard Club, an addition to the New York Public Library, and exterior renovation and upgrade for the Guggenheim. He is currently engaged in the revitalization of Historic Front Street, a mixed used project in New York’s South Street Seaport. Sciame no doubt applied his expertise to the extensive renovations of this waterview estate.

The current owner raised the foundation by five feet, retaining original masonry, in order to protect against flooding.

The dramatic entrance features soaring ceilings and expansive views of the Long Island Sound past the columns.

Pickled oak floors and crisp white woodwork lend a charming nautical look to the living room.

Beadboard, coffered ceilings, and an expansive breakfast bar/island maintain the period decor of the home.

Display alcoves, crystal and china drawer pulls, and marble countertops add additional elegance and charm.

Small panes of glass were replaced with expansive walls of glass during the renovation. Views of the property’s salt water pond or the Sound are available from almost every room.

The Sciames kept the original fireplace where Ms. Hepburn was often photographed.

The 3.4 acres include 680 feet of waterfront.

This renovated bedroom features sweeping views of the Sound and a charming window seat.

Imagine waking up to this view!

This scene reminds us of Hepburn’s 1981 On Golden Pond.

Back in the 1930s and 40s, Howard Hughes used to land his seaplane directly in front of the brick home.
