The Gator Bowl passed up Clemson, Miami and Boston College to select the Seminoles and give Bowden an alluring matchup for his final game. Bowden was the coach at WVU before moving on to FSU.

Forty-two of Bowden’s 388 career wins came at West Virginia between 1970-1975. The Seminoles finished 5-6 in Bowden's inaugural year of 1976 and haven't had a losing season since, although a loss to the Mountaineers would snap that 32-year run.
